What is Relationships and Sex Education?

Relationships and sex are complicated and sensitive subjects to teach. We’re here to help you gain a good understanding of what’s required so you’re able to deliver impactful lessons.

Teaching what is relevant to children and young people today

Children and young people need to get a good understanding of relationships and sex so they grow up able to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and health.

Most schools are already delivering a good PSHE education and should build upon (rather than unpick) what they already teach.

Our resources and guidance documents will give you a solid grounding to be able to teach with confidence. They will give you the flexibility to deliver the content in a way that is age and developmentally appropriate, and sensitive to the needs and religious background of your pupils.

Health Education and Relationships Education are mandatory in all primary schools

Relationships education will build positive foundations for healthy and safe relationships of all kinds. This will start with family and friends, how to be kind, and exploring online friendships.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is compulsory in all secondary schools

In key stages 3 and 4, your PSHE education will include learning about respectful relationships, families, contraception and parenthood, understanding consent, staying safe online, and healthy intimate and sexual relationships.

We are the national body for PSHE education
