Portsmouth City Council and PSHE Association launch partnership to improve PSHE education in the city

Schools from across Portsmouth gathered yesterday for the launch of an important new pilot initiative aimed at driving up standards of personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education in the city. PSHE education supports young people to negotiate real life challenges and opportunities including employability, relationships, safety and wellbeing.

Funded by Portsmouth City Council and delivered by the PSHE Association, the pilot will develop PSHE provision in ten schools in Portsmouth over the next fifteen months through a dedicated programme of support and training matched to local need.

The PSHE Association, Portsmouth City Council and the pilot schools will then work together to create a programme which can be rolled out across the city, and adapted by individual schools to meet the needs of their pupils.

Rimple Poonia from Portsmouth City Council said:

''Good quality PSHE is vital in equipping young people to make positive choices and young people from across the city have identified this as a key priority in helping to support their wellbeing and educational achievement. We are delighted to be working with the PSHE Association and our schools to take this important area of work forward and hope to roll the pilot out to further schools in the next phase.''

PSHE Association Chief Executive Joe Hayman said:

“This is one of the first initiatives of its kind in England, and demonstrates the great commitment Portsmouth City Council has shown to improving outcomes for children and young people across this city. We are looking forward to working with the City Council over the next fifteen months to achieve sustainable change in PSHE education in the city, supporting the development of new confidence and skill of teachers in the city to make a real difference for their pupils.”
