We are pleased to announce the publication of Sex and relationships education (SRE) for the 21st century, new guidance developed by the PSHE Association and our partners Brook and the Sex Education Forum. This advice supplements existing statutory Department for Education guidance for schools with information that better recognises the needs of our members when addressing 21st century challenges such as online pornography and staying safe online.
This new advice complements guidance the PSHE Association has previously produced, including a suite of SRE resources which are available free to our members, such as guidance for schools on writing an effective SRE policy and advice on addressing the impact of sex and pornography in the media. PSHE Association members can also access our online CPD programme which includes a module focused on SRE, and are encouraged to use our PSHE education Programme of Study to ensure that SRE is well-integrated into a broader PSHE curriculum.
Chief Executive Joe Hayman said:
“Though a vital element of the PSHE curriculum, teachers often feel nervous about teaching SRE. By following the principles set out in this document, colleagues across the country will know that they are teaching in line with best practice and will have the full support of their national Association and our partners at SEF and Brook.
No single document can provide all of the answers, and we will continue to develop our support for members, as well as resources on specific issues, such as our upcoming guidance on the teaching of consent. If there are other areas in which members feel we can be of support, we hope that members will get in touch.”
