Welcome back! Your resources, CPD & support for 2019-20

Written by PSHE Association | 3 September 2020

Welcome back! We hope you had a restful summer. There are now only 12 months left until the introduction of statutory Health Education, Relationships Education and RSE – so we’ll be working very hard to support you with these and other aspects of PSHE education during the year ahead. We have exciting plans, so watch out for new resources, courses and other areas of support. In the meantime, here's a reminder of our latest training and resources.

Our latest CPD training – get ready for statutory changes, Ofsted and more

We’ve just updated this term’s training calendar and we recommend booking now as places are filling up rapidly. We have courses this term covering:

  • Statutory changes: getting ready for statutory RSE, Relationships Education and Health Education.
  • Ofsted: exploring the new inspection framework’s greater emphasis on PSHE.
  • Training days on understanding, planning and leading PSHE education and effective PSHE in SEND settings.

Highlights include:

  • NEW: Get ready for statutory Health Education! (courses for KS1&2 and KS3&4): Our November 7th courses will equip you to cover mental and physical health effectively through PSHE, and meet new statutory Health Education requirements, including teaching about mental health safely and effectively.
  • Effective leadership and management in PSHE education: These courses for primary (3/10) and secondary (16/10) colleagues will support you to lead and manage PSHE. You will leave with a wealth of practical tips, guidance and resources.
  • Understanding PSHE education (KS1-4): The perfect course for those ‘in at the deep end’ and new to the subject. Running in London on 17th September and suitable for primary and secondary.
  • Preparing for statutory RSE within secondary PSHE: We’re delighted to bring this very popular course to York on 4 December.

Your Latest Resources

You can look forward to many new resources this year, but in the meantime a reminder of some key materials we published at the end of last term:

  • Lesson plans, activities and guidance on teaching about mental health & emotional wellbeing — These materials have been fully updated and relaunched for 2019 to match the government’s new statutory PSHE requirements regarding Health Education, Relationships Education and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).
    • The suite of 18 lesson plans covers numerous topics, including teaching about the link between mental and physical health; teaching about challenging stigma; promoting healthy coping strategies; developing ‘digital resilience’ and awareness of common mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression.
    • PowerPoint versions of all mental health lesson plans are exclusively available to PSHE Association members complete with facilitator-only slides with clear guidance notes, student-facing slides to support engaging lessons and a range of activities to deliver during lessons
  • New guides to supporting parental engagement — These two new guides will support primary and secondary colleagues to engage with parents about PSHE education, including Relationships Education and RSE aspects of the subject. They provide practical advice for schools — including a template letter and parent workshop plan — on how to positively communicate about the statutory changes, as well as an overview of requirements regarding withdrawal of pupils from sex education.
  • Mapping your PSHE provision to statutory requirements:  In preparation for 2020, we will be launching our updated PSHE education Programme of Study (KS1 – 5) this term (watch this space!) and this version will incorporate more detail on how the it fits with new statutory Health Education, Relationships Education and RSE guidance. In the meantime, you can still use the current version of our Programme of Study to plan this year with confidence, as we have published a mapping guide to how it covers — and goes beyond — the statutory guidance.

Local networks

We know some of you are involved in local networks, and others may be keen to set up new networks of their own to discuss and share PSHE best practice. We’re exploring ways we can support this activity and would like to hear from those of you involved in such groups or considering organising something locally. Drop us a line with details and we’ll get back to you to discuss.
