The second reading of Caroline Lucas’s Statutory PSHE Bill has been postponed until February. A debate of a bill which would make Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education a statutory requirement for schools has been postponed until February (21 November). The PSHE Association has responded to the Bill’s postponement, acknowledging the disappointment of those hoping to see PSHE debated in Parliament, but welcoming the positive statement made the Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan, namely that PSHE is ‘exceptionally important’. The Times reports on yesterday's first oral evidence session for the Education Select Committee inquiry into PSHE and SRE. The article states: "Charity leaders have revived calls for compulsory [PSHE} education claiming that trends such as sexting meant that young people were being failed… They told MPs yesterday that all teenagers should have mandatory sex education to protect them from rape, exploitation, domestic violence, arranged marriage and female genital mutilation" (21 October) Read the Times article here (£)
