We are pleased to announce a series of changes in our Board of Trustees, Advisory Council and staff team which we believe will help the Association to improve the status, profile and impact of PSHE education across the country.
Board of Trustees
At trustee level, Carol Beaumont is taking over from Mark Vickers as Chair of the Association, while Pat Bagshaw is taking over from Jan Campbell at Vice Chair.
Carol is an independent charity consultant and Clore Social Fellow with 11 years’ experience of fundraising, marketing, partnership development and strategic planning across a range of causes including Action for Children, Reach Volunteering, Breast Cancer Campaign and the Campaign Against Living Miserably. She tweets @carobeau and is a keen cook, reader and runner.
Pat is a retired Head Teacher and PSHE teacher with 37 years of experience of teaching in the secondary state sector, predominantly in London and in 'challenging' schools, and including seven years in Leicestershire. She has a particular interest in equalities issues of all kinds, but especially in anti-racist education and helping support children from countries around the world to adapt to and prosper in UK schools and in special education.
Both Mark and Jan will stay on as trustees of the Association.
In a joint statement, Carol and Pat said:
“We've both been Trustees since 2010 and have hugely valued the opportunity to work under Mark and Jan’s leadership during that period. They have relentlessly kept the Association focused on what it does best, making sure our members have the support they need to deliver, and thanks to them the Association is in a very strong position with an expert staff team, a committed board of Trustees, and a growing movement of members. We are delighted that the Association will continue to benefit from their knowledge and expertise on the Board and, for us, it's a genuine privilege to step up to Chair and Vice-Chair and a challenge which we are very much looking forward to. We both strongly believe that all children and young people deserve a high quality PSHE education to help them to make good decisions about their lives, overcome the challenges they may face and make the most of the opportunities ahead of them.”
Advisory Council
As many members will know, we have recently completed a recruitment process for new Advisory Council members. Six new members of the Advisory Council have been appointed. They are:
We are also pleased to say that Jane Hyland from the Nottingham Healthy Schools Team has agreed to step up as acting Chair of the Advisory Council for the next five months during Karen Summers’ secondment to the Association’s staff team. Sarah Lyles will step up to vice chair during that period.
Acting Chair Jane Hyland said:
“I’m delighted to be taking on the role of Acting Chair while Karen Summers takes up her secondment with the Association. It will be a big challenge to fill Karen’s shoes but I look forward to working with her during her secondment to the Association. It has been a pleasure working with Karen on the recruitment of new Advisory Council members from such a strong field of candidates. Our six new colleagues will bring a great range of skills and experience to the Council and I am delighted that we are bringing together more serving teachers from across the country, as well as colleagues with backgrounds in emotional health, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and public health, to complement the considerable skills and experience of existing Council members.”
Staff
This has been a time of significant change in the staff team at the Association.
Commenting on the staffing changes, Chief Executive Joe Hayman said:
“We are delighted with the additions we have made to the team. We know our members want more support mental health and emotional wellbeing and at Key Stages 1 and 2, and I believe the Pooky and Karen will help us to provide more support on these crucial areas, while Jenny and Alice will boost our support to schools on PSHE teaching, research and evaluation. Pooky, Jenny, Karen and Alice bring a wealth of experience to the team.
I am also very pleased that Robert, Parama and Olivia will be working with us over the coming months to improve our members’ experience of the Association.
These additions to the staff team complement the new skills and experience we are bringing into the Advisory Council and we all look forward to working together under Carol and Pat’s leadership in their new roles as Chair and Vice Chair of Trustees.”
