The PSHE Association has welcomed an initiative launched by the Department for Education today to help schools to support pupils’ mental health. The PSHE Association will support this work by providing guidance to teachers on addressing mental health in the classroom.
Chief Executive Joe Hayman said:
"We welcome the commitment to children and young people’s mental health shown by Sam Gyimah and Nicky Morgan. In our last two annual member surveys, pupil mental health has come through as the biggest priority for PSHE teachers, reflecting the huge concern about mental health across society, and we therefore look forward to working with the DfE on this issue.
In particular, we look forward to emphasising to schools the role PSHE education can play in promoting positive mental health, reducing stigma and advising pupils on where to go if they think they or their friends might need additional support.
We also warmly welcome the valuable work which will be undertaken on counselling services by our colleagues at Place2Be."
