In Parliament today (15 June), Education Secretary Nicky Morgan confirmed that the Government will respond to the Commons Education Committee's recommendations on the status of PSHE education by Friday 26 June.
Responding to a question from Labour MP Jess Phillips, the Education Secretary said: "We have until 26 June to respond to the report and we intend to do so by then."
The Committee's recommendations were made in a landmark report, Life Lessons, which was published in February this year and called for a statutory entitlement to PSHE education for all school pupils.
The full text of the exchange between Jess Phillips and Nicky Morgan is below:
Jess Phillips (Birmingham, Yardley) (Lab):
I have worked with lots of children who have suffered domestic violence, rape, grooming and exploitation, and I have seen the damage it does to their lives. When will the Government respond to the Education Committee’s fifth report from the last Session and the recommendation that the Department for Education should “develop a workplan for introducing age-appropriate…SRE—sex and relationships education—as statutory subjects in primary and secondary schools”?
Nicky Morgan:
I thank the hon. Lady for her question and welcome her to the House. I take great personal interest in that issue. We have until 26 June to respond to the report and we intend to do so by then.
